Potential 2021 Changes

Post by Cardinals »

As you all know, we historically mirror Major League Baseball and its rule changes, notably adding the second wild card, the 10-day IL and the 26-man roster in recent years.

There is a very real possibility that the universal DH expands to the NL permanently in the MLB, and that there may be new playoffs in the MLB after this year. Whether or not you believe what Manfred said about it is another thing, but it's undoubtedly on the table in some capacity.

No decisions have been made for what we'll do for 2021, but be advised that we historically mirror MLB. This season, it was far too late for us to do so as the DH and playoff changes were made at the midway point of this season.

I was surprised how into the universal DH I was. I think the 3 batter rule for relievers put enough strategy in that I didn’t miss it. Heartily endorse following mlb if this is indeed a permanent rule change.

How do you enforce the three batter rule if DMB doesn't release a v12 with that option?

Yeah, that would require a DMB update. If they provide that, then it will be on the table.

I really don't like the playoff changes as it is purely a money grab - it makes absolutely no sense to play a 162-game season if they are just going to let 1/2 the league into the playoffs. There is no way the #1 seed should be 2 games away from losing to the #8 seed. An average team beating a great team 2 out of 3 happens quite often in baseball.

None of the other changes bother me other than the 3-batter rule for relievers, which I don't really like, but I can live with it.

I am of the opinion we should adopt any changes MLB makes unless there is substantial reason not to (or, just impossible to implement for some reason). While I may agree/disagree with some of these new things, I think its just a slippery slope to go down to not implement anything just because we dont feel like it. So, my vote is, and always will be, to mirror any changes MLB makes as long as we can (for instance with the 3 batter rule).

I agree with this sentiment.

Unless there is new DMB release it will not be possible to enforce the 3-batter rule, to my knowledge.
2008-2023 Mets: 1,054-1,223...463%
2006-2008 Rockies: 242-244...498%

IBC Total: 1,296-1,467...469%
2022: lost WC
2023: lost WC

Correct, this isn't doable unless DMB releases a patch. They could - they used to more in the past, but who knows.

I think it should come down to: when MLB makes a new rule, "I dont like it" shouldn't be reason at all to not implement it. "We can't actually do it due to constraints outside our control" is reason to not do it, until we are able to.
